This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding information we collect when you use our website, mobile application, and related services (collectively, the “Service”).

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

• Account information: Email address, display name, and password when you create an account.
• Profile information: Bio, about me, avatar photo, and other optional details you add to your profile.
• Health and fitness data: Fitness minutes, weight, nutrition information, and health-related goals you choose to track.
• Coaching data: Responses to SparkCoach check-ins, assessments, weekly reviews, mood ratings, reflections, and other information you share with our coaching features.
• Goals and planning data: SparkStreaks, daily planner items, priorities, vision boards, journal entries, and gratitude entries.
• Community content: Posts, comments, messages, and other content you share in SparkTeams, the activity feed, and direct messages.

Information Collected Automatically

• Usage data: Features you use, pages you visit, actions you take, and timing of your activity.
• Device information: Browser type, operating system, and device type.
• Log data: IP address, access times, and referring URLs.

How We Use Your Information

• Provide and personalize the Service: Including AI-powered coaching through SparkCoach, which uses your goals, check-in data, and assessment responses to deliver personalized guidance.
• Track your progress: SparkStreaks, fitness tracking, SparkPoints, and other progress features.
• Enable community features: Activity feed, SparkTeams, messaging, and social interactions you choose to participate in.
• Improve the Service: Analyze usage patterns to improve features and develop new ones.
• Communicate with you: Service updates, coaching messages, and optional email notifications.
• Ensure safety: Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service.

AI-Powered Coaching

SparkCoach uses artificial intelligence (powered by Anthropic's Claude) to provide personalized coaching. When you use SparkCoach features:

• Your check-in responses, assessment answers, goals, streaks, and planner data are used to generate personalized coaching insights.
• Your data is sent to Anthropic's API for processing. Anthropic does not use your data to train their models.
• AI coaching is not a substitute for professional medical, mental health, or nutritional advice.
• You can opt out of AI coaching features at any time by not using them — your data will still be stored but will not be processed by AI.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in these limited circumstances:

• With your consent: Content you choose to share in the community, activity feed, or SparkTeams is visible to other members according to your sharing settings.
• Service providers: We use third-party services to operate the platform, including Supabase (database and authentication), Vercel (hosting), Anthropic (AI coaching), and Unsplash (images). These providers only access data necessary to perform their services.
• Legal requirements: If required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
• Safety: To protect the rights, property, or safety of SparkPeople, our users, or the public.

We do not display advertising and do not share your data with advertisers.

Data Storage and Security

• Your data is stored on servers located in the United States (AWS, via Supabase).
• We use industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and row-level security policies to protect your data.
• Your password is securely hashed and never stored in plain text.
• While we take reasonable measures to protect your information, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.

Your Rights and Choices

• Access and update: You can access and update your profile information, coaching data, and sharing preferences at any time through the Service.
• Delete your account: You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at contact@sparkpeople.com. We will delete your data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
• Data export: You may request a copy of your personal data by contacting us.
• Sharing controls: You can control what is shared to the activity feed through your feed preferences. You can adjust the visibility of individual content.
• Email communications: You can opt out of non-essential emails at any time.

Children's Privacy

SparkPeople 2.0 is intended for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a user under 18, we will promptly delete that information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on the Service and updating the “Last updated” date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
